Nursing

We live holistic nursing and care

Activating and holistic, rehabilitative nursing care is an essential component of successful treatment at the Children's Hospital Schömberg. We plan our daily routine in a resource-oriented way, which means that we respond to our patients in a way that is individually supportive or challenging, and our nursing staff is ready to help around the clock.

The special feature of our nursing self-image is that we see patients as part of their family environment. Therefore, it is particularly important for us to continuously involve the relatives in our work. In order to meet the individual needs and clinical pictures, we orient ourselves in nursing care to individually adaptable concepts such as basal stimulation, the Bobath concept and positioning in neutral position (LIN).

Our care does more than care

Wherever possible, we work on the wards in reference nursing with fixed contact persons for the small and large patients and their accompanying persons.

Basic and treatment care with many additionally acquired qualifications forms the basis of our nursing activities. In order to achieve the described understanding of nursing care, our nursing care also includes the following additional tasks:

The initiation of all activities and functions that have been impaired by illness or accidents. In small steps, with sensitivity and empathy, great importance is attached to support and accompaniment in "helping people to help themselves". The activities of daily living are understood as the basis for reorientation. This is done with personal hygiene, dressing and getting changed and eating training with assistance in food and fluid intake. If necessary, excretions are monitored or toilet training is performed.

We use various positioning options for patients with impaired mobility. Professional observation and the recognition and avoidance of decubitus ulcers and thromboses are in the foreground. In addition to prophylaxis, our tasks also include adequate dressing and wound management. Mobilisation is aided with personal assistance or with the help of lifters, standing aids, standing stands and transfer aids.

For the focus on enteral nutrition and PEG management, we are optimally equipped with buttons, gastrotubes and feeding tubes.

In addition to the usual treatment nursing tasks such as administering medication and monitoring vital signs. And, of course, the nursing team also provides individual educational support to promote social skills.

    Experience meets commitment

Our nursing experts have versatile skills that are applied according to individual care planning. Additional qualifications through further education, continuous training and re-certification complement the range of competencies and ensure an up-to-date level of knowledge.

Nursing staff with additional qualifications in out-of-hospital ventilation support patients in cooperation with the respiratory therapist when long-term ventilation has to be applied. Other important competences are tracheal cannula management, basal stimulation and positioning according to Bobath and LIN.

The staff members are also trained in matters of enteral nutrition, PEG/button management, coma care and rehabilitation care. Further competences are wound management ICW, palliative care including pain management, hygiene and practical guidance.

For the diverse tasks in the nursing and care service, specialists from different professional groups of nursing (health and children's nursing, health and nursing care) or pedagogy (educators, curative education nurses) complement each other.

    Nursing observes, promotes and connects

The direct interdisciplinary cooperation with the medical area, the therapeutic areas, psychology, the hospital school and the school kindergarten guarantee a close interlocking of the common therapy and care goals. They all complement, promote and stabilise the developmental and rehabilitation processes of the patients.

Our work is based on a holistic view of the human being, which understands him or her as a unit embedded in his or her social environment. The recognition of the dignity of the human being and his or her destiny is therefore our top priority. We fully recognise the meaning of life and the right to live, regardless of the severity of the limitations. Our view of humanity and our basic attitude have a direct effect on the care and support of the children and families entrusted to us. We are guided by the individual needs and abilities of the sick children and the resources of the families. Through their behaviour, all staff members contribute to making patients and accompanying persons feel comfortable with us.

The mothers and fathers are involved in all processes of rehabilitative care - from admission to discharge of their children - and are accompanied accordingly and instructed in the care of their child.

    Comprehensive equipment for comprehensive care

The nursing and care service works on three wards with 21 beds each. Double rooms are available here. Two rooms each share a bathroom.

In addition, the Children`s Hospital Schömberg has another ward with eight spacious single rooms, each with a large wet room. These rooms with special equipment are available as optional services. You can find out more about optional services under Further information.

In addition to the patient rooms, each ward has common rooms where patients can eat, play and communicate. In addition, a SAFESPACE is available on one ward as a retreat room as well as for relaxation and basal support. Depending on requirements, a pleasant atmosphere can be created here with coloured projections, music and sounds as well as smells. In the patients' rooms, too, a projector can be used to create an image and sound environment that offers variety and promotes relaxation.

School and kindergarten rooms as well as a room for occupational therapy are also integrated into the daily routine of the ward.

The accompanying person admitted can either stay in the patient's room with their child or in a surrounding boarding house and be with their child during the day.

Qualified care with heart and soul

The nursing team at the Children's Hospital Schömberg cares, helps, accompanies and supports wherever possible. We know what a good nursing service has to do and what the people entrusted to us and their relatives expect from us. That is why our care team is not only at your side when it comes to the familiar care services, but also provides comprehensive advice, helps with care classification and arranges sensible further services.
